Webasto Diesel Heater: Glow Plug Replacement Made Easy | Enjoy the Satisfying Rebuild Time-Lapse!

Webasto Diesel Heater timelapse is a short video or photographic sequence that showcases the strip down and rebuild of the d5000 heater. Designed to help you see how easy and straightforward a glow plug replacement is. You only need basic tools.

These heaters enjoy widespread popularity in automotive and marine applications, delivering efficient and dependable heating through the use of diesel fuel. The heater we utilized on our boat was the #Airtop #d5000 model, which came as part of the original boat equipment. The Airtop models in this range share a similar design, ensuring consistent performance.

The time-lapse video typically captures significant moments, including the initial setup, the connection of the heater to the vehicle or vessel's fuel source and electrical system, and the heater's operation, generating warm air and maintaining a comfortable environment.

On this occasion, it marked the second time I serviced the heater. I had previously purchased a service kit for my d5000, which included the middle section, a new glow plug, burner tube, and mesh. This kit cost approximately £350. I want to clarify that I have no affiliation with butlertechnik. I simply stumbled upon their eBay store and website, and I found their customer service to be quite satisfactory. Webasto Exploded diagram.

However, the Webasto parts are pretty expensive (for me this is a week's pay!).

The time-lapse video was shot during the subsequent winter. We found ourselves replacing the glow plug once more due to a burnt cable. The task itself is relatively straightforward, but the high cost of replacement parts made it a bit of an investment. A few months down the line, I made the decision to swap out the heater for an inexpensive Chinese diesel heater that I purchased on Amazon for £100. Surprisingly, it performed quite decently. If you were to place it side by side with the original expensive heater and remove the outer casing, you'd be hard-pressed to distinguish between the two.

In the realm of marketing, there's a concept known as "premium price association," where you tend to assume that a higher price equates to a better product. However, that's not always the case. My primary goal is to replace the Chinese heater with something better next year, preferably one that can also heat hot water while running. Staying warm is a priority, especially in the UK, where we experience four seasons in a day.

Transitioning from the Webasto heater to the Chinese one was a fairly straightforward process. I utilized the same mounting brackets and exhaust system. As for the electrical connections, I essentially spliced the wires and used the existing Webasto cables, connecting them to the new heater. If I remember correctly, there were three cables from the d5000 heater. The Chinese heater also came with a remote control, claiming to be a 5kw version, although I have my doubts about that. My boat is a Sun Odyssey 40, and you can check out a tour of it via this link.

I also replaced the fuel pump from the original Webasto with the one that came with the Chinese heater. The Webasto had a 20-amp car fuse directly linked to the battery, while the Chinese heater used a 15-amp fuse, which I also swapped for the lower-rated one. So far, I've been using the heater for approximately 2 months, with the longest continuous use being 5 hours. I make sure to turn it off before going to bed, so it doesn't run overnight. Initially, there was some smoke, which is a normal occurrence, as they apply an oil-based protective film during storage, and this residue burns off.

I should mention that I have friends who have made the switch to these heaters without any issues. However, someone did caution me that swapping them out might void the insurance on your boat, so it's advisable to check with your insurance provider before making the switch.
